INTERVIEW WITH AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE
«Recording Tango Umbrella was like giving birth, very painful,it was hard work. There was loads of ups and downs, it was all very emotional»
AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE new record has been one of the long awaited records of 2016. It is clearly an album where we can tell that they are back to their old days with some new waves coming too, after cancelling their tour with MUSHROOM HEAD in the UK, Metalcry wanted to talk with the band about Tango Umbrella after a month or being released, touring, the actual situation of the band and many other things that we would love to share with you. Enjoy!
How does it feel to release a new length album after eleven years?
It feels amazing. We are grateful that we are able to keep doing this. Getting all the songs ready was very exciting. After taking a long break as band we thought this will never happened and here it is…Tango Umbrella has been on the market for a month and we are pleased to see that it is doing quite well.
Tango Umbrella was released exactly a month ago, What can you tell us about this new record?
I really feels like is the first record we ever released as a band. It took us a very long to record this album, We have all these ideas in our heads and put them together and to work was not an easy task due to personal circumstances but there is loads of growth in terms of song writing, recording the tracks .We are quite proud of this new record because it sounds exactly they way we wanted to sound, old school AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE.
How was the recording process of Tango Umbrella?
It was like giving birth, very painful,it was hard work. There was loads of ups and downs it was very emotional, one of us had health issues so it was really hard for him to keep the same energy, so he tried by doing some exercise using an amazon pilates ball at home. We spent all day and night in the studio, loads of coffee, not much sleep…but it was worth it.
Whoa…it looks like it was really hard to get this record together…any funny anecdotes during at all?
There is this one night where one of us were in the control room and our singer started to do this impression like we actually were in a rock concert and so we all started playing Holy driver of DIO but changing the lyrics…it was quite funny. Probably as a result of the lack of sleep but we wet ourselves laughing so loud!
When We listened to the new record, we can clearly tell that you guys have gone back to early days, which I am sure your fans are really pleased…What did make you back to your roots?
Well…if it works…why change? We have been listening to our demos and missed that sound so we decided to bring this old sound back. However this record also heads in a new direction, we have been playing around with keyboards and led to a new hype. There is a song which really feels like a lullaby called A king among men, We definitely let ourselves go in all aspects. We did what we thought it was right and it all worked out very well.
When it comes to write lyrics and melodies….What is the main inspiration for AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE?
A lot of our lyrics turn to be really emotional. There is a lot of personal emotions in our tracks, our lyrics are open to interpretation. Very poetic, personal it opens a big rainbow of interpretation. It is like the name of the record itself, it really doesn’t mean anything specific, we choose the name randomly but we didn’t even know if this album was going to happen for real. We are really grateful that we got crowd funding from our fans.
That is true…you guys face some financial issues during this record.
It wasn’t for our fans We wouldn’t be able to make this record, that was a big surprise.
In Loudwire you become voted the most anticipated released of last March, you were even in front of IGGY POP latest record…Did you feel any pressure due to this high expectations from your audience?
We saw the percentages and we were quite astonished how people and fans took us as number one. It great to this great support.
Once we started to hear our final mixes,it all began to make sense we were not scared, we felt confident that our fans were going to love this new record, we felt their energy in a sense while recording.
We know you guys loving covering songs live and in your records, How come you decided not to include any this time?
Well, wanted to create something completely new so no room for covers, we might played some new covers live…who knows? You just have to wait and see.
Talking about playing live….what is your favourite tune to play live?
All wrapped up. It is a crowd pleasure.
Changing the subject a little bit…when AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE started in the music business, more than a decade ago, Internet was just emerging and many of your fans will support the band by buying your records. But now, let’s face it people do not buy records any more and people seem to listen to music through music platforms such as SPOTIFY. How all this changes in the music industry has impact for AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE?
For us it didn’t has changed that much, we still get the support from our fans. People come to our shows and buy the merch, records. We tried to keep a close eye of what is going on and try to adapted it. That is all you can do really!
We can tell that AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE spend good time in the social media to talk to fans…so that must be a positive change for sure…
For sure,we love to communicate with our fans and hanging out with them every time we are on tour.
So that’s all from METALCRY tonight, thank you for having us.Would you like to send a special message to your fans in Spain and UK?
Thank you for your loyalty. Don’t ever count us out. Thank you for listening and support our music.
