JOHN GARCIA+ELDER+ MOS GENERATOR+ WHITE MILES – THE GARAGE, LONDON – 02/07/15
“Garcia brings his own desert heat to London”
Beginning of July and a heatwave strikes London, every single Pub and Park is packed, everybody wants to be out to enjoy some sunshine and also celebrate that summer has finally arrived. It´s a day to be do some outdoor activities but…hold on a minute…Today John Garcia is playing in the borough of Islington and Metalcry can´t miss it.
In the same bill we have tonight bands like ELDER , MOS GENERATOR and WHITE MILES.
It´s seven o´clock in the evening and The garage is almost full, once we manage to go inside, we noticed that there are queues to order drinks everywhere and all surrounded by gigant black fans to give us some air. It´s damn hot and WHITE MILES will turn the venue even hotter!
First I heard from them, was when they supported the almightly Courtney Love last year in her Uk tour. It was a big surprise to us to see them again. WHITE MILES is a band that bring something new and fresh to scence with their Blues tints. Having publish their first record last year, this duo have had the chance to tour with well known musicians like Courtney love, BLUE PILLS and tonight with John Garcia.
Medina gets on stage and first thing she asked the crowd is «Are you ready London?» and first notes of Can´t stop starts playing. This duo is proving us once again that you do not need more than two people to play loud and good rock and roll. His drummer Lofi is really energetic and between the two of them there is something special going on, they feel their music very deep inside and they love play it live. Although their performance was a bit short, they made a good impression in the audience and their show will finish with their lastest hit Fake Smile.
After this interesting performance, we can actually say that the venue is completely full! Something that catches our eye is that there are some celebreties of the stoner scene in the crowd, Londoners STEAK and ORANGE GOBLIN couldn´t miss that date, which is not surprising as Mister Garcia is one of the big personalities in Stoner Rock.
Now it´s time for some MOS GENERATOR, formed in Washington DC, they have been active since 2002 and published seven full-lengh records so far. They have always had good critics in the media and music press thanks to his music, which is a bit trippy and catchy at the same time. There were quite a lot of supporters of the band tonight and everyone seems very excited with their show. MOS GENERATOR set took a look at all their records with tunes like Silver Olympus from Songs for future gods or Lonely one Kenobi from Nomads.
Despite their brief act ( A total of six songs) was enough to catch the atmosphere this band brings and some more interaction with the crowd would have been much appreciated, it was a very standard show and their wasn´t great, making us think that they sound way better in the record than live.
Time is almost up for John Garcia to hit the stage but before that it´s show time for some geeky stoner like these americans from Boston called ELDER do. ELDER is one of these bands that are special but in another sense. ELDER puts you in a another state of mind, with their audiovisual effects in somewhere between spirituality and trippy (Depending on the eye of the beholder). The reason why they were add to the bill is obvious, they released a new record last february called Lore, it is a five track album with songs of ten minutes length which represents a concept in life. Is also a band that can´t deny SLEEP, ELECTRIC WIZARD or BLACK SABBATH influence in their music.
They opened the show with Dead Roots Stirring from the same titled album they publish in 2011 leaving us speechless. After this tune they played songs from Elder such as Compedium and Spirit at Aphelion. Their set also also include some compositions from previous EP´s, but we should highlight is the virtuosity this band brings along.
Their music led the way through the show and made all the interaction, words are not always needed when you want to express your work, the whole response of the public of clapping and praising the band. They seemed overwhelmed and grateful by the audience and promised to come back fairly soon.
So ELDER lived up to someone´s expectations aand with no time to waste John Garcia´s band take over the stage.
Suddenly all stage turns into red lights, deep red lights. While former drummer is taking a sit in the drums, guitars and bass start jamming making all the crowd scream and be exicted, through all this labyrinthic melodies all leds to the first chords of Gardenia, one of the main hits of the band that made John Garcia the musician that is today, is one of the referents when we talk about stoner rock, KYUSS.
John shows up and this movement and style that makes him unique, the way he grabs the microphone as he was ridding his own mexican rodeo, he can´t stop grinning at his audience, John Garcia seems thrilled to be in London.
With no break, One inch man from KYUSS hits again, Garcia knows what his audience wants to listen tonight and judging by other times we have seen him live, we were quiet surprised when he decided to carry on the show with compositions of his solo career and latest album such as his new hit My mind or Rolling Stoned.
The whole gig was quite homogenic in every sense, almost everything had the same tempo, he´s got a very faithful audience that never misses a show every time he is in town.
One of the most remarkable monuments of tonight gig was when he decided to play Cowboy suck ; one of the best songs he ever recorded together with one of his numerous music proyects like HERMANO or when he started to play (Again) legendary tunes from his ex-band KYUSS such as El rodeo or Green Machine. When we tough the show came to an end, as while he was showing us his green machine was saying goodbye to his fans and showing his gratitude, but Garcia has some other surprises for us and of course his encore was two more tunes from KYUSS Freedom run , closing the night with Whitewater from KYUSS´S orgasmic record: Welcome to Sky Valley.
Overall we had a good night, there was a good bunch of bands, all of them with very talentuous and willing to show it, or let´s just better say that other couldn´t be bother to show it but in general lines they left the audience quiet happy and excited, as a matter of fact merchandising stands where almost empty at the end of the show, especially with bands like ELDER and rock star, John Garcia.
The heat did not really mattered after all, beer and spirits were running the whole night to keeps us merry and enjoy the music performed. From Metalcry we would like to say that it was a good and remarkable gig. On the downside, knowing so well the musical talent of John Garcia is a shame that the always relies in old KYUSS tunes too much and often, giving the impression that he just writes new songs to keep on but what really matters is his success in the early nineties that KYUSS brought to his career and keep his followers happy by singing the same old songs. But don´t get us wrong, It is good to remember the old times, but not work your shows around them.
