WOVENWAR+ AS LIONS+ STONEGHOST – THE UNDERWORLD, LONDON 29/05/15
What’s good, when brief, is twice as good
Is Friday night in London and we can feel in everyone´s face, there is loads of people hanging around in Camden town, tonight it feels like is going to be a good night as the song states.
Tonight WOVENWAR will be playing at the Underworld, surprisingly there no many people queueing, so maybe it will be a quiet night for the band.
WOVENWAR is one is this band risen from the ashes, good part of this members were members of the metal core American band AS I LAY DYING, for obvious reasons that we all know, they are no longer together.
Last year they came over to launch their new album at the Barfly and it was a tremendous success, tonight they are visiting us to remain us that they are still alive and kicking, and fairly soon they will start working in new material, as Josh Gilbert was telling us a few months ago when Metalcry had the opportunity to have a chat with him.
This WOVENWAR tour started in Germany, France and Belguim co-headlining with SYLOSIS, but unfortunately tonight they will not be headlining and we have some bands like AS LIONS and STONEGHOST add to the bill. We are really curious about them as we have never heard of them before, they seems fairly new bands to us.
So first band on stage, STONEGHOST, is a Metal core/ Hardcore English band, they have just released their first album called New ages of old ways and this summer they will be touring and playing in many UK festivals.
As we were saying before the venue is very quiet, I could say we were like twenty people inside, which is a shame but we really cannot blame the audience as not many people seems to know who STONEGHOST are.
Despite all this factors, Londoners STONEGHOST are giving everything they have to their audience, they are really energetic, and their singer Jason Smith keeps on trying to get the audience involved, asking for circle pit but no one seems to care much.
In their set we heard tunes like Faceless Ghost (First song of the album) Devils Motion, Your trigger, my finger, and they will say goodbye with Mother of all bastards, their set was very short, they played less than thirty minutes. Considering is a brand new band and they were the first ones to play, it was pretty awesome, they absolutely gave everything they could.
From Metalcry we will like to show our support and without any doubts they will get bigger and hopefully play longer sets for us.
And now is time to see AS LIONS live! It is one of these bands that we were very intrigued to see them live, this band has only released one song, yes you read it correctly, they have only one song and they are about to release an EP. So we can tell that this performance will be short too. But we wondering ourselves, How can AS LIONS be supporting WOVENWAR when this band has only song so far? Are they a super group? There must be a reason behind…Here is a hint folks…singer´s surname is Dickinson…Everything makes much sense now.
As we found that out, we were really excited to see Bruce Dickinson´s son band on stage, and they came out of stage, very passionate and full of excitement, we have to say that Ian´s has what it takes to be on stage and his voice is quite singular, his band has nothing to do with his dad´s band, as they are purely Metalcore.
First thing we heard on stage is “Thank you for sticking around, we are AS LIONS and this is our fifth performance so far” so yeah, they are pretty novel too. As Lions set was four songs, one of them “The fall” and the rest of them will be released shortly in their first EP. It was short again, but good quality.
Tonight it feels like we will go home early as the main band has only one album too, so we are not expecting much, which is a shame but I think every band is literally playing what they can offered.
It´s nine o´clock and the venue is busy now! Audience is quite diverse, we can see people from different generations and there is a long queue to buy merchandise of WOVENWAR, which makes us think that their fans are very supportive and loyal.
With no delays, lights went down, and Foreword starts, is a very melodic piece and is warming us up to what is about to happened and there we go, we can hear the first riff of The Mason.
Shane Blay went on stage, he seems very happy to be back at Camden the same as the rest of band, everyone is jumping up and down the stage, they have positive vibe and all of us can feel it.
Then it was time for Death to rights audience went out of control and everyone in the venue is moshing and doing circle pits, there is rage, but somehow is very positive.
Between songs the band keeps praising their audience for supporting the band at all times and being always there for them. They seem to be pretty attached to their crowd, I could divide this gig in two times like a football match, the first one was clearly leaded by Shane Blay, and all of us had our eyes on him. His voice has the perfect pitch, his growls and clean vocals were pretty awesome, (exactly the same as you can hear it on their record).
But leadership will pass in to Josh when we hear first notes of Matter of time, that song was the first one the band has ever written, even before WOVENWAR was not even a thought. The crowd went all over him and we could feel some certain nostalgia in the crowd, this song has some similarities to melodies and riffs of AS I LAY DYING tunes.
But WOVENWAR must go on and Prophets is playing now, everyone with lighters in the air and singing along, that was quite something, and an unforgettable applause from the crowd.
Gig is becoming to an end and we are warned that there will not be any encore has the band already played all the songs from their album, that makes us laugh, cos that has been the same attitude with all the bands tonight.
Nevertheless we are having a good time at The Underworld, saying that last song of the night is All rise which make everyone jump, crowd surfing and enjoy every minute of this song. When we saw all the crowd jumping on the stage we could see certain bewilderment with the members of the band but some reason they decided not to make a fuss and they joined the party crowd surfing and keep everyone very excited.
General lines we could say that all bands kept professional at all times, and they gave us everything they could offered which is something that we truly appreciated. WOVENWAR have an amazing fan base and we are pretty sure that with their second record, they get bigger in the scene.
