ENTREVISTA A EVILE
«Somos cabeza de cartel por primera vez en un festival»
Nada más pisar tierras asturianas para asistir a la V Edición del LUARCA METAL FEST, tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistar a los cabezas de cartel del evento, los británicos Evile. Dado que el nivel de inglés de nuestro entrevistador, Oier Bernal, no es muy elevado, contó con la colaboración especial de su pareja, Anne Dark. Y aquí os dejamos lo más destacado de la entrevista:
En primer lugar queremos agradeceros vuestro retorno a España, ¡Bienvenidos!
EVILE: ¡Gracias!
Para comenzar con la entrevista… Este fin de semana tenemos la oportunidad de disfrutar de un amplio abanico de bandas de Metal, y contamos con vosotros como cabeza de cartel. ¿Qué opinión os merece ésto y cómo os sentís?
EVILE: Es cierto, es la primera vez que actuamos como cabeza de cartel en España y es genial. Es una gran oportunidad y un honor para nuestra banda actuar aquí y volver a encontrarnos con nuestros fans en este país. Nuestras actuaciones no suelen superar los 30 minutos y creo que hoy contamos con 75 minutos, ¿no es así?
¡Sí! (todos). Eso debe estar muy bien… (risas).
Comenzasteis vuestra andadura en el terreno musical hace más de diez años. Os conocimos con el nombre de “Metal Militia”, y os disteis a conocer por interpretar covers de una de las bandas más potentes del panorama musical, como es Metallica.
EVILE: Así es.
¿Cuál fue el detonante que os hizo dar un cambio en la banda, con una nueva denominación, EVILE y temas propios?
EVILE: La razón principal fue que nos cansamos de tocar temas de otras bandas. Al finalizar cada tema, el público gritaba, se mostraba muy eufórico, y pensábamos “éste no es un tema nuestro”…
Eso nos hizo pensar en dar un giro y empezar con algo nuestro y ya en el local de ensayo, comenzamos a componer.
Fue una progresión natural el hecho de empezar esa nueva etapa. Fuimos intercalando uno o dos temas de nuestra cosecha propia en los sets, mientras seguíamos, aunque en menor medida, unidos al hilo de Metal Militia.
Notamos que el público respondió positivamente, así que, ¿Por qué no dedicarnos a ello por completo, siendo ése el deseo de todos los miembros de la banda?
¿Habéis tenido la oportunidad de conocer a Metallica personalmente?
EVILE: (todos) No… No todavía… ¡Estamos en ello! (entre risas).
Nos encontramos en un festival al aire libre. En España contamos con variedad de festivales de este tipo, tales como Sonisphere, Costa de Fuego, Resurrection Fest. ¿Qué opináis que es mejor para una banda, festivales al aire libre o en salas?
EVILE: Ambas opciones tienen algo bueno. En el caso de los festivales al aire libre vemos una pequeña desventaja, la distancia entre el público y la banda. Estamos de acuerdo en que la gente está disfrutando del espectáculo pero en una sala es más fácil sentir el calor de la gente.
¿Eso significa sentir más la cercanía de los espectadores?
EVILE: Eso es, las salas hacen que el show resulte más intenso, y a la vez más íntimo.
Por el contrario, en los festivales gozamos de más espacio, la gente tiene la oportunidad de tumbarse y ver los conciertos, por ejemplo (risas).
¿Creéis que los festivales son una buena opción para descubrir nuevas bandas? ¿Animamos a todo el mundo a que el año que viene venga al LUARCA METAL FEST?
EVILE: ¡Sí, por supuesto!
Hablemos ahora del mercado musical en Europa y al otro lado del Atlántico. ¿Dónde creéis que estáis teniendo mayor éxito, en EEUU o en Europa? Son dos mercados muy distintos…
EVILE: Hemos obtenido más ventas de nuestro último disco en América. Pasamos cinco meses allí y fue una experiencia muy intensa.
(En medio de la entrevista una atronadora sirena retumbó en el recinto. Compartíamos escena con un animado partido de fútbol.)
EVILE: ¡Parad! ¡Tiempo muerto! (entre risas).
El primer mes que estuvimos allí fue interesante, descubrimos muchos seguidores, y a medida que el tiempo pasaba se iba incrementando. Es la ventaja de viajar mucho, darnos la oportunidad de conocer y de que nos conozcan.
En Gran Bretaña nos conocen hace mas de diez años, ¿trece quizás? ¡Sí, ya son trece años! (boquiabiertos). Hemos ido creciendo como banda con el tiempo. Y qué decir de Gran Bretaña, es nuestro hogar…
Cual es vuestra percepción en lo que a la gente se refiere, ¿En EEUU está más abierta a descubrir nuevas bandas y nuevos estilos, o eso es algo que se da más en Europa?
EVILE: Cuando comenzamos a tocar en EEUU, la gente pensaba, por qué escucharlos? Y eso resultó ser un reto para nosotros. Cuando descubrían la banda por primera vez, podían decidir si les gustábamos o no.
Viajáis mucho, por carretera imaginamos… Seguro que habéis vivido muchas experiencias y curiosidades durante las largas horas al volante. ¿Podríais compartir con nosotros las mas sonadas?
EVILE: ¡Sí! ¿Historias estúpidas? (risas). Tenemos muchas… Hemos vivido situaciones de locura en la carretera…
Neumáticos que explotaban, gente tiroteada a nuestro alrededor (risas), yo me rompí la mandíbula (Ol Drake), sufrimos un secuestro…
¿Un secuestro? Contadnos como ocurrió.
EVILE: Habíamos reservado un taxi, mediante una nota escrita en un papel que decía “vuestro taxi esta aquí, luego por aquí…” Fuimos a ese lugar y preguntamos a la gente que allí se encontraba. “Si, ¡tenemos taxis!” Montamos en el coche y le explicamos al conductor donde estaba nuestro hotel, el conductor asintió con la cabeza, parecía que sabia donde estaba, pero nos condujo hacia otro lugar! Pasamos nuestro hotel y nos llevó hasta un gueto. Pensamos: « ¡Nos van a matar!» (risas).
Pero al final todo fue bien…
¡Suena un poco aterrador…! (risas). Continuando con la entrevista, dadnos el nombre de dos bandas que hayan tenido una gran influencia en vuestra música.
EVILE: Sepultura.
Y… (en voz baja), ¿tal vez Metallica?
EVILE: (risas) ¡Claro, éso es obvio! Hemos aprendido a base de escuchar diferentes estilos. Aunque el thrash es nuestra base, disfrutamos con bandas como Queen, Guns n’ Roses… Siempre se aprende algo de lo que disfrutas escuchando.
Es decir que un buen músico debe sumergirse en los diferentes estilos de música y aprender de ellos.
EVILE: Por supuesto! No puedes cerrarte solo en una cosa. Yo no podría escuchar thrash las 24h del día, mi cerebro dejaría de pensar. No significa que no me apasione el thrash, pero la variedad y la diversidad de estilos es fundamental.
Para concluir, dadnos una visión de futuro de la banda, a corto plazo, quizás 2 o 3 años…
EVILE: En paro… (risas). Nos vemos girando y grabando discos! Siempre hemos dicho que no buscamos ser millonarios. Solo queremos hacer de esto una forma de vida. Si eso ocurre a corto plazo, seria genial!
Por tanto, ¿El tema económico no es tan relevante como podríamos pensar?
EVILE: El dinero facilita mucho las cosas… Pero no lo es todo.

EVILE: Ardilla, árbol… (risas). Es una broma… Apoyad el Metal, apoyad a las bandas que os gustan, comprad camisetas, CDs… Porque esa es la única manera de que las bandas sigamos en la carretera, y ofreciendo lo que mejor sabemos hacer. ¡¡VIVA EL THRASH METAL!!

Just as I arrived to LUARCA METAL FEST, I had the chance to make a short interview to the headline band of the festival, the british EVILE. Due to my english level is not so high, I count on a special collaboration of Anne Dark; and this is the funny speech they gave to Metalcry readers:
First of all, we wanna thank you for coming back to Spain, welcome!
EVILE: Thank you. Gracias.
Let’s begin with the interview… Talking about this weekend, we have the chance to meet many bands of Metal, and you are the head band of the festival. What do you think about it, how does it feel?
EVILE: It’s real, our first comeback to Spain as headline of a festival and it’s very nice, ‘cause we’ve never been headline, so it’s a good oportunity for us. As well as fans in Spain come to check us.
We can play longer than like 30 minutes, we used to get, you know, 15 or 30 minutes, and now we’ve got 75 minutes, haven’t we?
Yeah. So should be great, should be very good!
Should be, should be… (laughs)
Sure… Ok, we place your beginning as a band 13 years ago with another name, you were called “Metal Militia” and made covers of the worldwide known band, Metallica.
EVILE: Yeah.
Which was the reason why you changed your band’s name to EVILE and started composing your own songs?
EVILE: In fast, we got bored playing other people’s music, like we finished the song, it was like “uhuhuh!!!”, people was so excited, and was like, well, it’s not our song.
And so we started thinking, that’s right, we need our own stuff, so when we were in the rehearsal room we just started writing.
Yeah it was a natural progression to start writing in our own material while we were still playing the covers.
And we kindly put one or two new songs on our own in our set, while we were playing the other band’s covers. And noticed that fans just were appealed to them like the covers were. So why not do it full time as so each wants to do?
Have you ever met Metallica during this 13 years?
EVILE: (on choir) No, not yet…
What a pity!
EVILE: (laughs). We’re getting it.
Well, we are in an Open Air Festival. Here in Spain we’ve got many festivals such as this one: Sonisphere, Costa de Fuego, Resurrection Fest… What about an open air show comparing with a show in a club? Where do you feel better?
EVILE: I think both of them are great in their own ways. The only thing I see such as a downside in festivals, is the distance between us and the people. It’s great that they’re having fun but it’s not the same as they’re being there in a club, it’s like just… you feel the heat of people.
You mean it’s easier to feel them nearer when playing in a club?
EVILE: That’s it. The smallest things get bigger in a club. Feels like more intense.
We prefer clubs, I think they are more intimal. But festivals are great, ‘cause it’s nice to have the space here, and you can lay on the ground if you want to…(laughs).
We could say shows on clubs look more sober?
EVILE: Yeah, it’s good to be after people that wouldn’t hear of us. If you play around a club gig, it’s sure they want to see you but in a festival there’s people who have never heard of you, so they’re like “oh, they’re quite good” or “that’s shit” (laughs).
So, you think festivals are a good chance to discover new bands? We recommend everybody coming up to here next year!
EVILE: Yeah, sure!
Talking about market here and on the other side of the Atlantic, where do you think you’re having more success, in the USA or in Europe? Both them are different markets I think…
EVILE: Still in the UK. I think we lastly sold more albums in America. We did about five months in America and it was so intense.
Suddenly a horn roared and everyone was shocked (they were playing a football match next to the interview scene).
EVILE: Stop! Incorrect! Fault! (laughs)
The first month we did was ok, there was like few people. But each time we round, goes more and more. It’s just the case of touring everywhere, as much as possible.
People know us in the UK a lot more than ten years. Not more now? Thirteen years.
Thirteen? Yeah…
Because UK is our home so…
In your opinion, people in the USA are more open-minded to discover new bands and new styles, than in Europe?
EVILE: I think specially when we first played there, a lot of people were like, “why should we care about you”, but that became a challenge for us, I think. People after seeing us live to appreciate if we are good or not.
Well, you travel a lot by road, I think… And you surely have many experiences and curiosities during the tours. Could you please share the strangest ones with us?
EVILE: Yes! So, you want to hear stupid stories? We’ve got far too many…We’ve had many crazy situations on the road…
Tyres exploding day after day, people getting shooted nearly (laughs), broken jaws, we got kidnapped in America…
Really? Tell us about the kidnapping incident…
EVILE: We had a taxi booked by a piece of paper saying: your taxi is there, then go there… So we walked to this taxi guys asking for one: “Oh taxi, yes we’ve got”. Then we got into the car, and told him where our hotel was, and he said, “well yep…” . Then drove somewhere to… we were posted to a ghetto, he drove passed to our hotel… we thought, we’re gonna get killed! (laughs).
Well, but finally, it was all right…
Scaring… (laughs). Well, let’s go on. Tell, me please the name of two bands that had a great influence in your music.
EVILE: Sepultura.
And (low voiced), maybe Metallica?
EVILE: (laughs) Yeah, I think that’s the most obvious. We take influence from so many different styles. Basically in through thrash, but we listen to all kinds of many different stuff, like Sepultura, Metallica (laughs).
And all rock n’ roll, such as Queen, you know Guns n’ Roses, anything… You can always join things from anything you enjoy listening to.
A good musician should always listen to different kinds of music, and learn from them…
EVILE: Of course! You cannot be blinked in an only kind of music. I couln’t listen to thrash all the time… ‘cause my brain would stop working I think. Well, I don’t mean I don’t love it but you need diversity, variety.
To get the interview finished, give us a short view of the earliest future of Evile. How do you see yourselves in two or three years time?
EVILE: Unemployed… (laughs). Touring and recording albums. That’s it! We’ve always said that we don’t wanna be rich or become millionaires for doing this. We just wanna be able to keep doing this for a living, and be able to do it and nothing else. If we are able to do it in two years time, should be great!
So money is not as outstanding as we are used to think?
EVILE: The money makes it easier…

EVILE: Torch, squirrel, tree… (laughs). Support metal, support the bands you like, buy T-shirts, Cds, ‘cause that’s the way bands can still be on the road doing what we do. And UP THRASH METAL! That’s it!
