INTERVIEW WITH MY SLEEPING KARMA
«People started to mix us with spiritual concepts and religion, what we like from Buddhism is the freedom and space that it has, which is something very important to us , our music is open and free»
MY SLEEPING KARMA will be releasing a new album called Moksha next week. We happened to be at DESERTFEST LONDON few weeks ago and we got to spend some time to talk with them about this new forth-coming album, recording process, religion and how do they feel about Buddhism…just it check it out, It was hypnotic!

It took us almost three years to bring Moksha album out, while we were recording this album, we were touring too, at some point for personal reasons we have to stop recording it. It was really important to keep our concept, then we took our time to think about our artwork, video release, everything turned to be slower than we expected but we are very happy with the result, we hope people like it, we have a good feeling, it will be released the 19th of May.
Can you give us any insight about the recording process?
This time was a little bit different, in this album our key board really took pride in the song writing. It´s the first time we include a piano piece in our album which was really interesting. We have also include new instruments that we have never used before, so in all a completely new experience.
We have our small studio,we record everything ourselves, our drummer produce the album that is the main reasons it took longer than expected to released this record.
How is it going to be different from your previous Soma?
Is very different from Soma, we have experiment with sounds and styles, each song is pretty different from each other, our heavy metal root came out, this album is much more progressive I would say. Is more deep and detailed, more hypnotic and packed.
Please, tell us a bit about the concept behind Moksha
Concept represents the state of widening of music, horizons. We are more focus in the green world in this album, it´s kind of open, the cover talks about the green world and reality.
This is your second album with NAPALM RECORDS, how do you feel with the label?
Very good, we are really satisfied with the way they work with us, we communicate with them very well and they understand our views as a band very well.
How does a German band end up being so inspired by buddhism and eastern culture?
Four us is really interesting. We feel that our music is good to use for meditation, going deep inside, we thought it could connect very good, it could represent this religion and we try to be a little different.
The connection the band has with this culture and philosophy/religion combined with your sound makes for a very spiritual outcome while listening your music, is it also as spiritual while writing?
To answer this question, we have to go back to the beginning where the music was the first thing that came out, we are not into Buddhism. The name of MY SLEEPING KARMA come out unexpectedly, we thought it would fixed pretty good with our music and that brought our connection with philosophy and religion. Suddenly, people started to mix us with spiritual concepts and religion, what we like from Buddhism is the freedom and space that it has, which is something very important to us as we don’t have lyrics in our music for the same reason, our music is open and free.
How would you describe your sound?
Hypnotic and emotional rock.
As before, Hinduism is also a visible element in your albums, being present in your covers and artwork. In “Tri” we saw Vishnu, the Supreme God and your new album “Moshka” has a very Ganesha look, the god of wisdom and intelligence – how important is the artwork for you? Would you say you use your artwork to express the message that might get lost since you don’t have vocals?
We just add the artwork because we like it, for us our first thing is the music,we like to integrate it to our music for people who has never seen us or listen to us, it has good a strong effect to people, but it is not necessary. Our music express a lot.
How does social media works in terms of promotion and communicating with fans for MY SLEEPING KARMA?
MY SLEEPING KARMA didn’t like at the beginning all this social media tools, but we know you have to have a Facebook page or Twitter account if you have a band these days, some times we posted funny stuff there, like when we are rehearsing and drinking beer, we get funny comments and we think is fine, we like to hear from people that listen to our music.
Any kind words for Metalcry readers in Spain and UK?
It was really nice and warmed last time we played in Spain, We would like to thanked all people in Spain for having us and we hope we can play more shows there. For us every show is a gift, is not easy for to arrange shows, so when we go somewhere we want to play the best show possible.
