LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SZIGET FESTIVAL AND ITS HISTORY!
The Sziget Festival is nowadays one of the biggest and more popular festivals in Europe with over 450.000 visitors every year coming from all parts of the world and one of the biggest and more varied Line-ups of the summer. But it’s been a long way to the top; it all started back in 1993 in the first edition of the festival, known as Student Island, when some enthusiastic amateurs and volunteers decided to give it a try. It had a great and unexpected success and Budapest’s city council helped out with the financial issues given the huge number of visitors that the island gathered. After the success of the first edition, and since in 1994 was the 25th anniversary of the legendary Woodstock festival, the organizers decided to pay tribute to the mother of all festivals, and called the second edition the Eurowoodstock. This second edition had 100.000 more visitors than the first one and it had artist like Jethro Tull or Frank Zappa. It was such a success that even the MTV gave a great feedback. The only problem was of course the money, but that didn’t stop the organizers from starting to work on the next edition.
In 2002 Pepsi quitted as main sponsor and Sziget became an individual band celebrating the 10th anniversary of the festival with 355000 participants. And from then the Sziget has only grown sharing its international philosophy of love, peace and party. This year 2016 will certainly be a huge success just like it was in the past year, if you want to have a better idea of what the festival offers, check out the video of the 2015 edition and see for yourselves what living in the Island of Freedom is like!
